Exam 10: E-Talent Management
Briefly explain how e-talent and its relationship to talent management.
o E- talent and eHRM technologies provide processes and algorithms. Algorithms are a set of step-by-step instructions to achieve a desired result in a finite number of moves and form the basic ingredient of all computer programs, telling the computer what specific steps to perform in what specific order with what priority or weighting so as to accomplish a specific task (Orlikowski and Scott, 2015:210). These algorithms (which includes coding, sorting, filtering, and ranking) are designed and configured by vendors and promise to provide "best practice" HRM processes founded upon a standardization of workflow procedures. E-Talent is imperative in enacting a talent management "system" because the software houses the capabilities and the technologically-enabled processes to evaluate and identify talent consistently. It is through e-talent that an organization can enact a set or system of practices. All employees are subjected to these 'best practices'.
What are the potential limitations of e-talent in retention?
o Advances in technologies such as LinkedIn have also afforded the ability for external organizations to locate and subsequently 'poach' employees. It is now cheaper and easier for organizations to contact potential candidates and share information about other job-related opportunities. Technological innovations, therefore, can both enable and hinder, talent retention.
How is e-talent used in talent retention?
o Organizations that identify, engage and develop their top talent require a talent retention strategy. This strategy details the resources allocated and activities conducted to ensure that identified talent subjects remain core to their workforce. Part of this resource allocation may include technological capabilities housed within e-talent or eHRM software that provides organizations with an ability to capture and generate data and information about talent retention rates. Search parameters can be entered into the eHRM to inquire about which employees have left the organization and how many of these were "talent".
