Exam 21: Solid, Toxic, and Hazardous Waste
Evaluate the use of dumps, sanitary landfills, and modern secure landfills in disposing of waste. In your evaluation provide the pros and cons and the context for which each disposal method would best work.
Open dumps:
Pro - cheap, no planning involved, easy to use
Con - non-regulated, unstable-may collapse, groundwater contamination, smells terrible
These types of dumps are mainly found in developing countries where technology and/or money is not available for other means of waste disposal.
Sanitary landfills:
Pro - waste regulated and controlled, covered w/dirt to decrease smell, convenient, relatively inexpensive, can be used to capture methane and generate electricity
Con - sometimes located on permeable or faulted rock formations, possible groundwater contamination, suitable sites becoming scarce
Works best in areas with sufficient land area-away from large populations, built in impermeable and stable geologic regions with little or no threat to groundwater contamination.
Secure landfills:
Pro - allow disposal of toxic waste, liner prevents groundwater contamination
Con - transportation of hazardous waste to disposal sites is the greatest concern because of the chance of accidental chemical spill (especially in urban areas), financial responsibility of abandoned waste sites (must be maintained for many years after being filled), best in areas with large amounts of hazardous wastes that need to be disposed of, would be best located away from urban areas.
