Question 1

Describe the steps you would take to sample for this research.

Accepted Answer

To sample for this research, I would first define the population of interest, which in this case would be the group of individuals or objects that I want to study. Then, I would determine the appropriate sampling method to use, whether it be random sampling, stratified sampling, cluster sampling, or another method.

Next, I would create a sampling frame, which is a list of all the members of the population from which I will draw my sample. This could be a list of individuals, households, businesses, or any other relevant units.

Once the sampling frame is established, I would select the sampling technique that best fits the research objectives and the characteristics of the population. I would then determine the sample size, taking into account factors such as the desired level of precision, the available resources, and the potential for non-response.

After the sample is selected, I would implement the sampling plan by reaching out to the selected individuals or units and collecting the necessary data. It would be important to ensure that the sampling process is carried out in a systematic and unbiased manner to minimize the potential for sampling errors.

Finally, I would analyze the data collected from the sample and draw conclusions about the population based on the findings. It would also be important to consider the limitations and potential sources of bias in the sampling process when interpreting the results of the research.

Question 2

You are analyzing privately held letters and e-mails written by now-deceased American soldiers stationed in Afghanistan to their romantic partners. What steps would you need to take to protect the letter writers and other people talked about in the letters and to generally keep the research in line with ethical guidelines?

Accepted Answer

First and foremost, it is important to obtain informed consent from the families or next of kin of the deceased soldiers in order to analyze and use their letters and e-mails for research purposes. This ensures that their privacy and wishes are respected.

Additionally, all identifying information such as names, addresses, and specific military units should be redacted from the letters and e-mails to protect the privacy of the letter writers and their romantic partners. Any other individuals mentioned in the letters should also be anonymized to prevent any potential harm or discomfort.

It is also crucial to adhere to ethical guidelines by obtaining approval from an institutional review board (IRB) or ethics committee before conducting the research. This ensures that the research is conducted in a manner that respects the rights and welfare of the individuals involved.

Furthermore, the research should be conducted with sensitivity and respect for the emotional content of the letters and e-mails. This may involve seeking support from mental health professionals or providing resources for participants who may be affected by the research.

Overall, the key steps to protect the letter writers and other individuals mentioned in the letters, as well as to keep the research in line with ethical guidelines, involve obtaining informed consent, anonymizing identifying information, obtaining IRB approval, and conducting the research with sensitivity and respect.
