Question 2

List and describe the three international divisions of labor used by world-system analysts.

Accepted Answer

World-system analysts identify three main international divisions of labor: core, semi-periphery, and periphery.

The core countries are typically the most developed and industrialized nations, such as the United States, Germany, and Japan. These countries often specialize in high-tech manufacturing, finance, and other advanced industries. They tend to have high wages and strong labor protections.

The semi-periphery consists of countries that are somewhat industrialized but still rely on lower-wage labor and have less advanced technology compared to core countries. Examples of semi-periphery countries include Brazil, South Africa, and South Korea. These countries often serve as intermediaries between core and periphery nations, and they may specialize in industries such as automotive manufacturing or electronics assembly.

The periphery includes the least developed countries, often in Africa, Latin America, and parts of Asia. These countries typically rely on low-wage labor and extractive industries such as agriculture, mining, and textiles. They often face challenges such as political instability, weak infrastructure, and limited access to education and healthcare.

Overall, these divisions of labor reflect the unequal distribution of economic power and resources in the global economy, with core countries benefiting from their position at the top of the hierarchy while periphery countries struggle to escape poverty and underdevelopment.
