Susa is one of the oldest-known settlements in the world, with evidence of urban structures dating back to approximately 4200 BCE.

Throughout its history, Susa served as a cultural and political center. It was the capital of the Elamite Empire and later became an important city in the Achaemenid Empire under Cyrus the Great and his successors. The city is mentioned in various historical texts, including the Bible, where it is referred to as Shushan, notably in the Book of Esther as the site where the story of Purim took place.

Susa was known for its architectural marvels, such as the Palace of Darius, which was constructed by Darius the Great. The city's ruins, including the palace, the Apadana (audience hall), and the royal city, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, reflecting their historical and cultural significance.

Archaeological excavations at Susa have uncovered numerous artifacts, inscriptions, and remains that provide insight into the art, religion, and daily life of its ancient inhabitants.
