Operating system deployment. Entire operating systems can be deployed to computers. SCCM uses image-based deployments and can be used for zero-touch installations, where the installation is performed without the need for administrator interaction. Smaller enterprises can use Windows Deployment Services (WDS) to deploy operating systems, but WDS requires more administrator interaction. SCCM and WDS both allow the deployment of customized images that are completely configured. You can also use SCCM after the deployment to customize the installation by pushing out additional applications or updates as needed.
Software application distribution. Applications can be deployed to clients with SCCM or Group Policy, but for large enterprises, Group Policy often doesn't provide enough control. As an example, SCCM allows you to schedule the installation of an application. This gives you the option of deploying the application over the network after normal business hours.
Patch management. Patches and updates can be deployed to clients with SCCM. SCCM improves on the abilities of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to deploy updates, allowing SCCM to handle a much larger number of clients. With SCCM, updates can also be scheduled and more tools are available to target the clients.
Client assessments. SCCM includes technology used in Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) and WSUS to inspect and assess clients, ensuring that they are up to date and compliant with other security requirements in the network. SCCM can create reports of non-compliant computers so that administrators can easily identify clients that are having problems.
Remote control. With SCCM, administrators and help desk support personnel can remote into systems to troubleshoot and resolve problems. Help desk professionals can use this feature to show a user how to resolve a problem, as with the Remote Assistance tool, but the user doesn't have to create a Remote Assistance request or approve the process. Administrators can also remote into systems to check their configuration.
Hardware and software inventory. SCCM uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), which can be used to query computers. Queries can identify computers on the network and the software installed on them.

SCOM builds on the basic philosophy that an administrator wants to know about problems before they happen.
